Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

What is PRP Therapy?

Although it has been used in sports medicine for decades PRP is now the latest cutting edge treatment in beauty and facial rejuvenation therapy. PRP concentrates the number of platelets from your blood, therefore concentrating the important regenerative growth factors they contain.

PRP is a naturally occurring component extracted from your own blood – blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. When platelets are activated in the body they release healing proteins called growth factors. Growth factors create an accumulative result, assisting the body to repair itself by regenerating new tissue, improving blood supply and would healing – all of which are very important factors in regenerative therapies.

How Does PRP Work in Tissue?

PRP contains high levels of platelets and when injected into tissue, growth factors are released – these are vital to tissue repair and healing. Ages and damaged tissue usually reflects poor texture, wrinkles, sagging and an uneven tone and patients seeking a natural appearance are increasingly recognising PRP as a useful and natural intervention to aid tissue and collagen stimulation.

As we age collagen production in the body starts to slow which is detrimental to our skin as collagen tissue throughout the human body is responsible for giving the skin its youthful, soft and spongy texture. Dermal fillers cannot directly address the texture and health of collagen tissue, however they can be used effectively in conjunction with PRP. Please refer to our injectable treatments page for further information.

Your skin texture will respond as new tissue cells grow, visible results may be seen after three to six weeks and continue for up to six months. Results will depend on your overall health status, dietary variations, age, whether you smoke and other health factors, including your skin type.

When is PRP Used?

We recommend PRP wherever soft and hard tissue remodeling and collagen rejuvenation is required:

  • Overall facial rejuvenation
  • Loose wrinkled skin on the neck
  • Wrinkling around the eyes
  • Acne scars
  • Back of hands and arms
  • Decolletage and chests
  • Post pregnancy skin stretching
  • Scar revision
  • Stretch marks

What Does the Process Involve?

A small sample of your own blood is processed in a highly specialised, state of the art system, specificualy designed to extract the PRP is a safe, clinical manner. This PRP is then injected into the areas that require tissue remodeling and rejuvenation. We recommend a series of treatments that are consistently spaced apart for optimal results.

Impressive Pre/Post pics of a patient who has received one treatment to her full face and neck of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). These amazing photographs demonstrate the natural look and enhancement that can be achieved through PRP. This patient has shown significant improvement in her skin elasticity, tone and texture. Wrinkles and fine lines have softened, her redness and spider veins on her cheeks have been significantly reduced and her skin elasticity on her neck has also significantly improved. This patient will continue to show improvement with a further two to three treatments.

Is PRP Therapy Safe to Use?

PRP is your own unique blood therefore you are using your own natural resources, which your body recognises, to repair and improve your skin tissue. The PRP is processed onsite, right in front of you, under exacting clinical standards which all clinicians must adhere to when working with blood products.

The therapy is performed by a registered nurse who is highly trained in the procedure. PRP has been used for decades in sports medicine, it has a strong research evidence base for its effectiveness.

Should I expect discomfort during or after the PRP treatment?

Each person is unique and the response to intra-dermal injections will vary, however adverse reactions are very rare. We offer topical anesthesia, laughing gas and other pain relief options to ensure you are relaxed and feel comfortable before injecting your PRP. You may feel a “tingling” sensation after the procedure and there may be redness, slight swelling and sometimes bruising, this is temporary and we will provide you with full appropriate after treatment and care.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The processing of your PRP will take 30 minutes and the procedure itself will take around 60 minutes – depending on the size of the area you are having treated. Approximate time is 1.5 hours in total.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Wrinkle Treatments including Injectable Dermal Fillers and Injectable Muscle Relaxants

What are the Different Anti-wrinkle Treatments?

In addition to daily creams and other topical products, an increasing number of men and women are turning to Cosmetic Clinics or Medispas for longer lasting facial rejuvenation procedures. At Ripley Medical & Skin Clinic these procedures include the administration of injectable muscle relaxants and injectable dermal fillers.

Injectable Wrinkle Treatments

We offer two major types of cosmetic injection for wrinkle treatment to improve cosmetic appearance: injectable muscle relaxants and injectable dermal fillers. These treatments can be used together or in isolation. The best treatment for you will depend on a few factors: the area being treated and the severity of the wrinkle, both of which vary between individuals.

Injectable Muscle Relaxants (Anti-wrinkle Injections)

Injectable muscle relaxants work by relaxing the wrinkle-causing muscles that cause people to frown or squint, creating an improved and ‘softer’ appearance. Once the muscle is relaxed, you cannot contract it and continue to make undesirable facial expressions. Thus, the cosmetic injections gradually smooth wrinkles and prevent wrinkles from forming again.

These are administered by injection, which is relatively painless. Effects begin within days and last several months. Relaxing the underlying muscles slowly smooth the overlying skin, softening wrinkles and returning a youthful appearance. Due to Australian law we cannot name these products by brand. Please call 07 5316 7868 to arrange a consultation to discuss your anti-aging concerns and find out how anti-wrinkle treatments can help you.

Following a maintenance treatment, you can prevent further wrinkles from developing and reverse existing lines, preventing aging and maintaining a youthful appearance. Many patients are now seeking treatment as early as their twenties or thirties to avoid developing permanent, deep lines. These preventative measures are often referred to as the “Liquid Face Lift”. However, it is never too late to start receiving anti-aging treatment, and bear in mind it is just as successful in males as it is in females.

The Treatment Procedure

The anti-aging procedure is fast and achieved with minimal interference to our patient’s busy schedule. Ice is placed over the area to be treated for 10 minutes or so, occasionally some numbing cream is also applied if patients are concerned. The nurse then gently injects the agreed upon area using an ultra-fine syringe. After treatment, you can return to work immediately. Occasionally the area may have a small bruise.

The agents that are injected are a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing facial muscles. The active ingredient is botulinum toxin, which is derived from bacteria, in much the same way penicillin is derived from mould. When injected into a muscle it causes weakness or a paralysis of that muscle by acting at the nerve-muscle junction, the protein is present only for a short time but effects last for several months. It is wonderful news that, unlike many other medications, the more this is used the less it’s needed. This protein is safe and has been used in different parts of medicine for several decades without producing significant side effects, it also has excellent patient tolerance.

What to Expect After Treatment

It is recommended patients maintain an erect posture so as not to manipulate the area of injection for at least four hours post injection. We recommend patients avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours and report any concerns to our clinic. Botulinum toxin has been used safely by doctors for nearly 30 years and is used by millions of people, both men and women, throughout the world every day. You can be assured it’s one of the most studied and researched medical treatments with no long-term side effects.

Please note: Treatment of frown lines on the forehead can cause minor temporary droop of an eyebrow in 2% of injections that could last 2-3 weeks. Occasionally, slight swelling or bruising can occur and can potentially stick around for a few days. The full effects will be visible around 3-5 days post treatment and usually lasts three or more months. Patients are always impressed and pleased with the dramatic difference treatments achieve; we aim to deliver a natural, softened and rejuvenated look rather than a frozen, un-natural look. Repeat injections usually last longer and the best time for a top up is before wrinkling starts to reoccur.

Injectable Dermal Fillers

Injectable dermal fillers are semi-permanent or permanent injectable treatments used in facial rejuvenation and contouring. Their use began a decade ago with lip augmentation but has become a staple of facial rejuvenation. As we age we unfortunately lose sub-cutaneous fat – the fat that gives us a healthy plumpness in our faces during our twenties. Precise, conservative but effective replacement can provide subtle and beautiful results.

The use of injectable or dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face is often called “The Liquid Face Lift” and is being used today by many men and women as an early alternative to surgical options. In conjunction with preventative measures, injectable or dermal fillers can be a very effective non-surgical treatment option.

At Face Plus Medispa we use injectable fillers for facial areas where there is a loss of elasticity in the skin and soft tissue, a loss of volume and sagging caused by the unavoidable ageing effects of gravity.

Our clinic takes a conservative and natural approach to facial contouring and injectable treatments, we take our time with each client to ensure your result is as natural and fresh as possible. You should only trust your face to an expert who has had extensive training and experience, and one who has an intimate knowledge of facial structure.

The Procedure

We will create a treatment plan that is specially and individually designed to meet your needs after taking into consideration your concerns, personal goals and other medical issues.

Temporary dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid or alternate permanent, longer lasting fillers will be considered. Many of these come with a built in analgesic effect – meaning the injection is virtually pain- free! However, if you feel more comfortable a local anesthetic can be used to numb particular areas if you are sensitive or worried about injections. Our treatments are simple, safe and conducted by professionals and we more often than not find “first-timers” surprised at how easy and non-traumatic it was.

Combining Treatments

Treatments can be used in conjunction with fillers to relax the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles and furrows. Precise treatment of fillers creates a more youthful contour and appearance. Subtle lip or cheek contouring can produce amazing results and can beautifully enhance your facial features. Depending on the number of injection sites and the injectables used, you can expect to be in and out within 30 minutes!

What to Expect After Treatment

Injectable fillers are usually visible instantly, depending on the product used and your individual goals some treatments may take two to three sessions to achieve your target result. Dependent on the product used, a top up session/s may be required. Some of the initial plumping you experience will be due to swelling, which is common when there are multiple injection sites. You may also experience some swelling and bruising in the first few days post treatment.

In non-smokers, bruising is rare. To minimise swelling, patients are advised to continue icing the sites and use arnica cream.

Patients are advised to avoid exercise and alcohol immediately after treatment. Patients should also avoid aspirin, vitamin E, anti-inflammatories, herbal supplements and other medications that promote bruising. If you are considering facial filler treatment please feel free to contact our clinic for pre-treatment tips to reduce the possibility of bruising.

Follow Up Treatments

In order to fine tune the results additional follow-up treatments may be necessary. We prefer to give our patients a more natural look when using dermal fillers and then build upon the treatments as the patient adjusts to their new look and provides their feedback and direction.

If you would like to discuss dermal and/or facial injectable fillers further please do not hesitate to contact our patient coordinator through our Online Inquiry Form or call 07 5316 7868 to book a consultation today.

Most injectables are temporary and administrated in the hands of trained and experienced professionals. Side effects are rare but can include bruising, redness, pain and swelling.

Sterile technique is essential and antibiotics are often used. Consent before your treatment will define all details. Our staff at Face Plus Medispa spend a lot of time discussing your options, possible risks and complications, benefits and outcomes to ensure you are completely comfortable before receiving any treatments. Due to Australian law we cannot name filler products by brand in advertising however the range of temporary and permanent fillers on the market is ever expanding and better than ever.

Injectable treatments should be taken seriously. Remember, only trust your face to an experienced team.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
